Children’s Books about Iowa
Iowa: A True Book, My United States, by Ann O. Squire
This children’s book is a pretty standard look around the state. It shows Des Moines, farmland of Iowa, and other state attractions.
Kate Shelley: Bound For Legend, by Robert D. San Souci (may be easier to find used copies)
Kate Shelley was a 15-year-old girl who became a railway hero when she alerted the station that the bridge had collapsed, and had to go to great lengths to do so.
Kate Shelley and the Midnight Express, by Margaret Wetterer
Same story, with an easier read.
McBroom’s Wonderful One-Acre Farm: Three Tall Tales, by Sid Fleishman
This silly short chapter book (or 3-in-1) is asking to get read aloud. The story is full of silly whistling phrases, old-fashioned devices, and life on an Iowa farm. Great as a read aloud to children around 1st grade. You can also often find the three books in this volume as separate editions, which would get you more illustrations inside than this 3-on-1.
